Question 01
Carl Rogers
coined two terms, i.e., “Fully Functioning Person” and “Maladjusted Person”.
Clarify your
concept about these phenomena and illustrate where your personality lies. You
need to
support your answer with your life experiences. (10)
Fully
Functioning Person
The "Fully Functioning" person
according to Rogers is psychologically healthy, open to new experiences and
aware of their own feelings and those of others. They live in the now, fully
immersed in theirexperience and not restricted by conditions of worth or
self-concepts. They are not afraid to make decisions based on their own
experiences, and they trust their own feelings of doing what is right andwill
accept the consequences. They accept that life changes and they welcome the
opportunity to usetheir creativity in adapting to the new changes.
Maladjusted
Person
The "maladjusted person" is the
polar opposite of the fully functioning individual (who was introduced early in
this essay). The maladjusted individual is defensive, maintains rather than
enhances his/her life, lives according to a preconceived plan, feels manipulated
rather than free, and is common andconforming rather than creative (Maddi,
1996). The fully functioning person, in contrast, is completelydefense-free,
open to experience, creative and able to live "the good life".
Empirical support for the fullyfunctioning person is somewhat mixed. The
openness to experience characteristic has been supported(Coan, 1972; cited in
Maddi, 1996). However, some studies have found that openness to experience
andorganismic trusting did not intercorrelate, contrary to expectations
(Pearson, 1969, 1974; cited in Maddi, 1996). Ryckmann (1993) notes that some
studies have found non-defensive people are more accepting
of others and Maddi (1996) cites numerous
studies that indicate self-accepting people also appear to be more accepting of
others.
I am fully function person and accept all
type of conditions, my thinking is not mixed with negative force recently my
friends abuse me and call me with many cheap words but I just avoid because of
I am fullyfunction person I can understand that when people criticism me it
does not mean I am actually that kind of person but it is time of to change myself
again.
Question
02
Another
concept given by Rogers is “Facilitator”. An article based on this concept,
named “Carl
Rogers (1902-1987)” has been uploaded
on VULMS. You are required to download that article,
read
the article in detail and answer the following questions:
What
would be the effects of this facilitation on students? (5)
Interactions in an
asynchronous discussion board as well as their satisfaction with an online
educational technology course. These participants were enrolled in three different
sections of the same online course. In the first section (Group 1), the
instructor responded to each student’s initial message regarding the discussion
question and then required students to respond to at least two of their
classmates’ postings. In the second section (Group 2), the instructor responded
to each student’s initial message to the discussion question, but did not
require students to respond to other classmates’postings. Instead, it was the
student’s voluntary choice. In the third group (Group 3), the instructor did
not respond to each student’s initial message on the discussion question, but
required students to respond to at least two classmates’ postings. Data were
analyzed both quantitatively and qualitatively, by
using ANOVA, social networking
analysis (SNA) and content analysis. The results indicated that in Group 2,
voluntary interactions among students rarely occurred, resulting in the
instructor primarily providingfeedback to the students, with a low number of
cues for social presence. In comparing Groups 1 and 3,when students were
required to respond to one another, too much instructor intervention did not
lead to more interactions among the students. Rather, when the instructor’s
intervention was minimal, students tended to more freely express their thoughts
and opinions, with a large number of cues for social presence. However, more
interactions among students, occurring in a required setting, may not have
correlated with student satisfaction with the online course ratings and the instructors’
ratings.
How a school teacher can
play the role of a facilitator? (5)
A teacher can be good
facilitator as Good eye contact Gives attention to what is being said -
particular words, body language and non-verbal expressions, vocal tones,
process and timing
Try to feel how the person is
feeling and thinking Attempt to become involved in how the speaker perceives
the world Express that you are listening, are following the ideas, are hearing
what is being said Send awareness of the person as a being with no judgmental
overtones
Validate recognition by
checking with the person or reflecting what was said Listen to disclosures
without rushing the person Work to rescue true meanings and real needs as a
part of listening
Direct personal encounter,
person to person
Defensiveness or retreating
are minimal and real sharing in maximized
Roles are recognized as roles
and not used to distance one another
Feelings are admitted and
recognized, those which are positive and those which are less comfortable but
just as real - anger,
sadness, weariness, joy, ennui, frustration, peace, need for solitude
Because human growth is
developmental, there is a peace in letting be, in giving time to children to
see
things in different ways from
our own
The right to disagree is valued, honored, and offered in peace
